Greenest City – Urban Agriculture Garden - West Neighbourhood House

Program Description

West Neighbourhood House, Greenest City Program is seeking volunteers to support our Urban Agriculture/Gardens program from April to October 2025. This program directly supports 3 communal edible gardens in the South of Parkdale: H.O.P.E Garden, Milky Way Garden, and Dunn Indigenous Garden in which low-income families and Indigenous grow their food to support their family’s diet and indigenous medicines and ceremonies. In addition to the edible gardens, we have assigned some areas for pollinator and native species that help to improve the biodiversity in the neighbourhood

 

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

Gardens Care and Regular Maintenance

  • Clean-ups
  • Planting
  • Composting
  • Watering
  • Weeding
  • Mulching
  • Seedlings
  • Gardening workshops support

 

Skills Required:

Technical skills required:

  • Good Physical condition for working outdoors.
  • It is not necessary to have specific knowledge related to food growing and/or pollinator gardens

 

Soft skills required:

  • Love for nature
  • Patience
  • Cooperation
  • Problem-solving
  • Responsibility
  • Creativity
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Must be friendly, reliable, responsible, non-judgemental, and non-discriminating.
  • Must be flexible and willing to learn
  • A police check is not required for this position.

 

Orientation, Training, and Benefits:

  • Staff provides orientation and training before volunteers start volunteering with the program
  • On-going support provided by staff.
  • On-going training opportunities and get-togethers provided throughout the year
  • Certification letter
  • Location(s) Hope Garden, Milky Way Garden, Dunn Indigenous Garden.
  • Number of hours each week: Depends on volunteers’ availability.
  • Length of commitment: From April 10 to October 20 or depending on volunteers’ availability.

 

Volunteer Commitment:

  • Program Time: Available  Twice a week Mondays and Fridays from 10 to 5 p.m. or upon volunteers’ availability arrangement
