Greenest City – Urban Agriculture/Gardens - West Neighbourhood House

Program Description

West Neighborhood House, Greenest City Program is seeking volunteers to support our Urban Agriculture/Gardens program. This program directly supports three communal gardens in the South of Parkdale: Hope Garden, Milky Way Garden, and Dunn Learning Garden in which families living on low-income and/or Indigenous participants grow food and indigenous medicines for personal use and ceremonies. In addition to the food producing gardens, we have assigned some areas for pollinator species that help to improve the biodiversity in the neighbourhood.

Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Grounds clean
  • Planting
  • Composting
  • Watering
  • Weeding
  • Seedlings
  • Plant identification (pollinators, natives, edible, medicine)
  • Maintenance
  • Gardening workshops

Skills Required:

  • Technical skills required:
    • Good Physical condition for working outdoors.
    • Specific knowledge related to food growing and/or pollinators gardens are an asset
  • Soft skills required:
    • Love for nature
    • Patience
    • Cooperation
    • Problem-solving
    • Responsibility
    • Creativity
    • Good communication skills in English
    • Must be friendly, reliable, responsible, non-judgemental, and non-discriminating.
    • Must be flexible and willing to learn
  • Police check required for this position. No

Orientation, Training, and Benefits:

  •  Staff provides orientation and training before volunteers are placed in the PGFM-
  • On-going support provided by staff.
  • On-going training opportunities and get-togethers provided throughout the year
  • Certification letter

 Volunteer Commitment:

  • Program Time: Available Twice a week Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 5 p.m. or upon volunteers’ availability arrangement
  • Location(s) Hope Garden, Milky Way Garden, Dunn learning garden.
  • Number of hours each week: Depends on volunteers’ availability.

Length of commitment: From June 10th to October 20th 2024
